Sibling Relationships Matter

In episode 38 of Healthy Family Connections, Neil answers a question from Alison, a mother from Austin, TX, looking to restore peace between her kids and in her family:

I have a 9 & 12 year old. They fight constantly, saying mean things to each other, poking at each other when I turn my back. I always tell them that they need to figure it out on their own. I can’t play referee. But, it doesn’t seem to help! What is your advice?

Listen to this week’s episode to hear Neil discuss:

  • The vital importance of sibling relationships
  • Acknowledging and addressing differences in temperaments of kids
  • Clarifying expectations and standards of behavior
  • Establishing accountability to expectations using earned privileges
  • How to be an empowered parent raising empowered kids

Neil says:

“Kids need to learn how to manage their own temperaments and how to make room for the temperaments of others.”

“At different ages, we want and think about and engage in different things. But we still have to have understanding and respect for each other.”

“The constant fighting between siblings can impact self-esteem.”
