I’m Talking, But Nobody’s Listening
Are you telling your young adult or teenager what you expect, but nothing changes? This week on Healthy Family Connections, Neil addresses how to be heard in response to Carol, a listener from Redwood City, CA, and her family woes:
I have a 21-year-old who works a lot. She has two jobs and she goes to school but she puts a lot more effort in her work and also prioritizes her jobs instead of her school. She doesn’t pay rent but she pays for everything she needs. She doesn’t ask for a cent from us. Her room is a hot mess that we ask her to always please pick up, and we tell her you don’t do anything around the house the least you can do is pick up after yourself over and over again. I can’t get her to stop watching her laptop; she just watches every chance she has. She just sits in her room and watches her laptop instead of reading the many books I bought her or doing something else for school. Or she goes out with her friends any chance she gets. I tell her that she’s not being productive enough. I just don’t know what else to do. Please help. She has a 16-year-old sister who listens to her more than to me. She needs to run things through me before she just takes off with her big sister and I know she’s not doing anything bad and I appreciate that they get along, but I still think that I want her to be more productive than my older one.
