Could You Be Suffering From Parental Burnout?

Are you feeling frustrated, exhausted, ineffective, and without pleasure and enjoyment in your role as a parent? Do you feel alone, unsupported, and underappreciated in your role? Are you experiencing sleeplessness, fatigue, loss of self-esteem, chronic worry, or hopelessness?

If more than one or two of the above conditions describes you, you are very likely experiencing parental burnout. Burnout is serious and can undermine mental health, physical health, and even your ability to function up to your own standards. The good news is that it is curable and avoidable.

Parental burnout is a topic I've dived into quite a bit on my podcast and in my role as a therapist working with families. If you think you're experiencing parental burnout, these podcast episodes and blog posts may help you on the road to recovery.

Could You Be Suffering From Parental Burnout?1. Parental Burnout is an Epidemic

Parental burnout is a real social crisis here. This podcast episode was inspired by a study that was developed in partnership with Pollfish, the online survey intelligence company, that revealed some shocking statistics on parental burnout. It showed me that we need to address it with a bigger sense of what’s wrong and a better vision of where we need to go to fix it.

2. Am I Programmed for Parental Burnout?

Are you a parent trying to do it all, with work and kids, and find yourself in a cycle of declining health? On this episode, I answered a question from a single mom who was really in over her head. I provide her with some tips to help her relieve the enormous stress she was feeling.

3. An Honest Look at the Cause & Effect of Parental Burnout

Is parental burnout a real thing, or is it just a way of saying parenting is a hard job? Burnout occurs when we lack balance or when our efforts go unrewarded. In the blog post, I address what parental burnout is and why it occurs. It's a great post to help you understand what exactly you're dealing with if you're experiencing burnout.

4. Turn Self-doubt & Burnout into Empowered Parenting

In this episode, I answer a question from a mother who was at her wits-end getting her son to manage his responsibilities. Ultimately, the solution was helping her, and other parents, understand the issues of parental self-doubt and burnout and provide the steps to overcoming that condition and becoming an empowered parent.

5. Parental Burnout: End it and Thrive

It is a common theme to struggle with the challenges of meeting the unending needs of your family while wondering if your needs will ever get met. In this episode, I help parents recognize the importance of burnout and identify when you should prioritize your needs.

During this time of profound disruption, don’t hesitate to reach out for help. Your local mental health resources are very much there, mostly using video platforms, and that works just fine, phones work too, and sometimes you can be seen in person as well.

If you're looking for a resource to help keep you productive at home while also helping you become a better parent, I've prepared a free gift just for you. It’s called Parenting Through Your Child's Second 12 Years. I know you’re thinking, "What the heck, 12 more years of parenting?" Adolescence neurologically, socially and emotionally, and often financially goes to around age 24. Yes, parenting your 20-year-olds is different than the teens. Download my gift and read and learn about the different stages of adolescence and critical strategies parents can use to avoid control battles and best support their adolescents’ quest for happy successful independence.

Please, take care of yourselves; you need it, you deserve it, you’re worth it.
