As a boy, I looked up to my dad. He engineered what others said couldn’t be done. And that’s always inspired me. As the middle of three kids, I played peacemaker in a household with some spectacular blow ups. Our family was great. Yet the chronic tension and violence really hurt.
After college, I taught mostly Hispanic kids in a rural school, working with my students’ families. I saw the great potential for transformation within the family unit.
With my passion for families ignited, I was off to Graduate School. I studied family therapy with the greats, Salvador Mnuchin, Carl Whitaker, the brief therapy institute. These Trail Blazers challenged the status quo. And this spoke to the people helper and the engineer within me.
Now I’m a master family therapist. I’ve evolved a model for working with families and wrote a book and developed an online course teaching parents to use my model with their teenagers. Especially when the going is rough.
People don’t realize family therapy is uniquely different from individual therapy. When family dynamics aren’t addressed, individual therapies typically fail. A family therapy approach helps organizations change and grow, too. I love using it when training mental health organizations and residential treatment centers to create healthier, more sustainable outcomes for everyone involved.
