Helping Your Depressed Teenager

Episode 006 · Duration: 00:08:54

Did you know that adolescent depression is on the rise? Parents of a depressed teen can feel like their hands are tied when it comes to helping their child. In this episode, Neil helps listeners recognize and address teen depression. How can you help a teenager who says they don’t care?

In episode six of Healthy Family Connections, Neil tackles a question from Tracy, a concerned mother, who is wondering how she should handle her teen’s apathetic attitude:

My son is apathetic and can’t imagine his future. So when we try to set expectations around school and attendance or encourage him to do things he defaults to saying he doesn’t want a life, most likely to avoid commitment and the discussion. How would you respond? – Tracy from Victoria, Australia

  1. Dear Neil,
Thanks for your podcast addressing my concerns. When I first listened to you speak on shrink radio I felt like you could have been speaking to me. I have read your articles and am reading your book and they have been incredibly helpful. We are making good progress by changing our language from consequences to privileges. We still have a long road to go but I thank you for sharing your wisdom and guidance.

    • Hi Tracy,

I’m glad to hear that this podcast and the book have been helpful you. It’s my goal with these resources to find real ways to create real change. Yes, the road is long. But in my career, I’m always amazed and impressed by the courage of family members and parents.
